The Pine River has been designated a quality trout mainstream by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Anglers may catch brook, rainbow, or brown trout in pools along the route. Steelhead and salmon may be caught in season near the mouth of the river with Walleye present as well.
An easy two-day trip, the Pine River National Canoe Route provides an enjoyable weekend float through large portions of the Hiawatha National Forest along a winding, beginners-level river. Flowing South East to its mouth in St. Martin Bay of Lake Huron, the river passes through diverse vegetation types including pine, aspen, maple and paper birch. Paddlers will encounter a variety of wildlife including White Tailed Deer, Black Bear and Gray Wolves.
Small openings along the river's edge called “rollways” reveal that the Pine River was once used as a 19th century travel way for log drives. Logs were cut and piled near the river in the winter. During the spring breakup, they were rolled into the river and floated to Lake Huron, where the logs were further transported by schooner to locations all around the world.
As the River flows south of Rudyard, it passes right through the St. Martins Deer Yard so you are very likely to see significant numbers of White Tail Deer on your lazy float to Lake Huron.
